How to start out working from home

Not sure how to start working from home?  Worried about the risk?  Not ready to give up your day job?

Don't be put off by these concerns.  They are natural.  It is a big move which takes planning to get right.

Here are some simple and safe steps which have worked for others, safe steps you can take to make the transition easy.
  • Start part time.  This is a natural step.  Find something you can do in the evenings or on weekends.  Something which does not rely on a full time commitment and something which does not require you to be home to respond or engage.
  • Start with a low engagement strategy.  There are business opportunities which does not require you to engage with customers.  These are the best for part time activity.
  • Work with a friend.  Just like job share, share the work from home experience.
  • Try a short term project.  Some work from home opportunities involve a fixed term contract.  This could involve piece work or a project where you work for a set number of hours and then the project ends.  While these opportunities take longer to find, they can be valuable in helping you experience variety.
Each of these opportunities has an exit and that is what you want if you are not sure that working from home is right for you.

Sometimes, trying a few part time or fixed term working from home opportunities are ideal for testing whether this approach is right for you.  Take your time, learn from each experience.  The more opportunities you try the better informed your ultimate decision will be about making the move to work from home full time.

An Early Start Gives You More Freedom in Working From Home

Get started early, get your work done and have some time to yourself in your day.  That is how I like to schedule my own time working from home.

My day usually starts in my home office at 5AM, eating breakfast while taking care of emails which have come in overnight.  Then I check my sites, collate stats and am ready to start the day proper by 5:30AM.

I usually work solid until around 10AM.  Then I have MY TIME until around 3PM.

I use MY TIME to walk, read, go to a movie, catch up with friends or garden.  While I call it MY TIME, it is usually business time too because I get ideas, nut through problems and plan.

I then hit the office again at 3PM and work through until 5PM.  This last two hours is for emails which have come in during the day, getting some prep work done for tomorrow and making a couple of moves on my online business strategies.

Every situation is different, I know.  This schedule works for me.  I start and end the day refreshed, financially better off and looking forward to tomorrow.

Tips For Building Your Home Business Customer Base

A good home based business will attract customers from a variety of sources
.
While many online websites and advisors focus on attracting customers online using SEO and other techniques, today I want to share some ideas for attracting customers to your home business using offline techniques:
  • Have business cards with you at all times.  these should promote your online presence.
  • Use your vehicle.  On a panel or the rear window, promote your online business.
  • Network - local service clubs, local business, social groups.  Get your name out there.
  • Write an article about your online business for the local newspaper.
  • Offer yourself as a speaker for service groups, talking about the speicalist area of your business.
  • Offer live affiliiate revenue - like online affiliates but person to person.  Give a commission if they bring business to you.
  • If appropriate, have brochures made and circulate thse through business, friends and others who will speak for your credibility.

It is important to balance your source of new customers and to therefore not rely on just one or two techniques.  Bringing customers to your online business through more traditional offline routes will enhance your operation help drive growth.
