For some, working from home is their first time opening and operating a business. It is easy to get caught up in the rush of being in this situation and losing focus on the need to be serious about the business.
It takes discipline to be focused on doing business rather than talking about it. Our natural inclination as humans is to spin our own situation. This could see you believing your own spin.
Here are some tips for pursuing action over words and therefore making the most possible from running a business from home:
Focus on your goals. Everything you do every day must move you toward your goals. If a task does not do this then it is likely to busy work and therefore a waste of your precious time.
Talk less. Avoid talking about what you are going to do when mixing with friends and family. Keep your own counsel. Prefer instead to look forward to the day when you can talk about what you have done, what you have achieved by working from home.
Celebrate success. Start each day with a TO DO list. This list should only include items which progress you to your goal. Mark things off as you go. Celebrate getting to the end of a day or the end of a shift in your home office when everything on your list is done.
Be cautious in answering questions. If people ask how your new business is going, be careful to not talk too much. Your business will be better served if you focus your energy on what you do rather than what you say.
Tell the truth. It is natural to want to talk up your new business. Try and avoid this as you could find yourself believing what you say and this could give you a false view of the world. It is vitally important that your perspective of your home based business is honest as this will help focus your mind on each decision you make.
Remember why you made the move to work from home, what you want from the experience, the personal, professional and financial outcome that you want. These are the key motivators for how you spend your work day and how you combat the instinct to talk up what you are doing.
Imagine how you will feel when out of the blue you can tell family and friends of the wonderful success you have made of your home based business. The thrill when they share in what will be genuine news to them - if you have been careful to not speak too much about what you are doing along the way.
Actions do speak louder than words. Focus more on building a strong and healthy home based business and less on telling people what you are doing.
